65. I Saw James Cameron in Lisbon

Day 65
Location 15: Lisbon
Jan. 4, 2023

You know how sometimes TV shows will do a story arc that spans two episodes, so at the beginning of the second episode they do a "Previously on..." montage that catches you up on the relevant context so you can properly enjoy what you're about to watch? Well, I'm going to do that real quick:
Previously on...my trip, I witnessed a room of people in Denmark singing John Denver's Take Me Home, Country Roads. This song feels deeply American and it was disorienting to watch a group of people poke fun at Americans and then turn around and sing the unofficial anthem of West Virginia.
Now's the part where we resume the present episode.
Early in the day, I got lunch at a restaurant with some live Portuguese music. Later, I saw more live music at a bar with some Americans I met on my train. One of them got on stage and sang some Amy Winehouse. Then, she left the stage and the performer played none other than Take Me Home, Country Roads. The feeling of disorientation I felt in Denmark returned. Having lived in Boston for three years, the only thing more bewildering would have been someone singing Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline (i.e. the song played at every Boston Red Sox game). Up next, he played Sweet Caroline. Here's a video with all of that:

On the way home from the bar, we were lucky enough to stumble across the world premiere for Avatar: The Way of Water that ended with a live Q&A featuring the director, James Cameron. The event had a pretty strict "no photos" policy, but I snuck a photo with three of the main stars of the film:
