Today I watched the Netherlands world cup game while in the Netherlands (for the second time during my stay in Amsterdam). Argentina went on to win in a tension-filled penalty kick showdown. But the tension of the game was overshadowed by the tension of the stream dropping out right at the 88th minute. People were booing.
The game was filled with an entertaining 4 goals. But the entertainment of the game was overshadowed by the entertainment of a blue-haired woman experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the game. In the hostel lobby, I met this guy. We followed the usual hostel conversation that I've had hundreds of times by now, including the standard Where are you from? "New York" he replied. When pressed, he added "Long Island". When pressed further, he offered up "Nassau County". I'm not sure why he was holding out information like he was the subject of a bad cop show's interrogation scene, but eventually I squeezed it out of him that he was from Roslyn, a town 15 minutes from my hometown. Yes, he is Jewish.
