146. Main Character Energy

Day 146
Location 29: Kotor, Montenegro
Mar. 26, 2023

In the past few months the phrase "main character energy" has entered the cultural lexicon. The expression is used to describe the kid in middle school who, when everyone wanted Chinese food, but he wanted pizza, everyone else suddenly wanted pizza. Or the type of person who always catches a t-shirt at a professional sports game's t-shirt cannon toss. Basically, in a world of Rob Schneiders, we're looking for a Jim Carrey. Everyone strives to posses main character energy, but in reality most of us are side characters, NPCs, losers! Today, though, my life was a movie and I was a main character. Here's what happened:

A few days ago, I made some great friends in Budva, a town only 35 minutes away by car. They all checked in to Old Town Hostel in Kotor yesterday, a day before my arrival.

When I arrived today, the hostel manager announced "oh you're Dylan Smith, the guy everyone's talking about".

As I waited in the lobby for my room to be made up, I started up a conversation with a few fellow guests. "Dylan" I answered to their inquiry about my name and they replied "Oh from New York, right?". They either had been hyped up on me by my friends or were stalkers. Either way, I was flattered.

The afternoon schedule consisted of a boat party with swimming, dancing, and drinking. Even Gatsby's parties were confined to domestic grounds. Throughout the aquatic festivities more and more people approached me to ask if I was "the Dylan". I felt like I was fielding questions at the red carpet premiere of The Mask. But instead of bending backwards to avoid an interview by some boring reporter named Adrian, I was downing hard seltzers and back-flipping into the Adriatic.

Dinner was served at a BBQ Tanjga, a restaurant that mistakenly serves portions designed to feed the alien from Alien. It's the food version of Mane n' Tail shampoo. Five different sides and four separate servings of meat were served not on plates, but on oval slabs of metal because anything weaker would crumble under the massive weight of smoked grub. I'd never been so physically and emotionally full at the same time. I would eat there two more times before the week's end.
