I had planned to just go straight to Budapest, but decided to spend a day in Bratislava. Ended up having one of the best days of the trip so far. Why?
The city was cool. It was fine. More importantly, during the morning's free walking tour, I met some really fun people and we all spent the day together. Here are some of the best moments from the day...
The Blue Church
We couldn't go inside because there was a real, Slovakian wedding in progress. Instead, we resolved to ask someone to take our photo, but only after failing to do a 10-second-self-timer photo.
A kind woman obliged to take our photo, and stood in the middle of the street for the optimal angle. She tapped the photo button. Immediately, we all realized the 10-second-self-timer was still on. In that moment, a car tried to turn into the road, but was blocked by the woman who was unable to move for another six seconds because the photo still hadn't been taken yet. We were all falling over laughing and the photo came out terrible. Here's a better version:
UFO Tower
The best view of Bratislava is from an aptly named large tower shaped like a UFO. You can see the incredible nighttime view of the city below. Under that is a video you must watch with sound on that captures when I saw Kid Cudi in the UFO Tower.
Here's the video (sound on):
Flag Ship
This restaurant used to be a cathedral and before that, a theater. That's not why our group lunch was memorable, though. We all tried to order the traditional Slovakian dish, halušky. Each time the waiter replied in a menacing tone, "it's sweet". "Well, is it traditional?" we all asked to double check that we were ordering the right thing. "Yea, I guess so" he muttered, which wasn't the confident response we were hoping for.
Turns out, we were wrong. We ordered a desert. It was, in fact, especially sweet and covered in poppy seeds. I cannot describe with words how many poppy seeds. More poppy seeds than I've seen in my entire life were on my plate. It was kinda gross.
The third photo below is from the bathroom's urinal. Say what you will about it, but that sticker is nicer than anything the waiter said to us.
That's all from Bratislava. Oh I had mulled wine and it was good but then we mixed it with hot chocolate (bottom, right) and it was so disgusting we all almost threw up. Bye!
